Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be an adult aged 18 or older who has been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU)
- You must have suffered multiple serious injuries, measured by a medical scoring system that indicates severe trauma (confirm with trial site)
- You must be on a breathing machine (ventilator) through a tube in your airway, either when first admitted to the ICU or within the first 24 hours, and expected to remain on it for at least 48 hours
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age are not eligible
- Women who are pregnant are not eligible
- People who are not on a breathing machine, or who are only using a non-invasive breathing support (such as a mask-based device), are not eligible
- People for whom feeding through a tube into the stomach or gut is not medically safe within 48 hours of admission are not eligible
- People who have recently had surgery on their stomach or intestines are not eligible
- People who regularly take steroid medications (such as prednisone or cortisone) as part of their ongoing treatment are not eligible
