Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are able to give informed consent themselves, or who have a parent, guardian, or legal representative who can give consent on their behalf (parents or guardians must sign the consent form for anyone under 18)
  • Some participants with a known or suspected condition called PIEZO2-related sensory dysfunction may be invited to take part in optional remote taste and mouth sensation testing — this is not required for joining the main study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who do not meet the inclusion criteria listed above
  • People whose medical condition or overall health is considered by the lead researcher and clinical team to be too unstable for the NIDCD and its clinical centre to safely support their care
  • For the optional taste testing portion only: people with active mouth sores, open cuts, or significant mouth pain
  • For the optional taste testing portion only: people who have had oral surgery or a dental procedure within the past 7 days
  • For the optional taste testing portion only: people with a known allergy or sensitivity to tannins or polyphenols (compounds found in certain foods, teas, and plants)
  • For the optional taste testing portion only: people currently experiencing an acute upper respiratory infection (such as a cold) or any condition that may affect their sense of taste
