The heart's pumping function (left ventricle) is measured at 40% or less of normal capacity.

The person is currently experiencing an acute heart attack or related emergency heart event.
The person is under 18 years of age.
The person has a history of serious irregular heart rhythms originating in the lower chambers of the heart, and does not have an implanted defibrillator device (ICD) to manage this.
