Who might be able to join this trial:
As a mentee (younger participant):
- People who have been diagnosed with a heart condition
- People who received their diagnosis at least 4 months ago
- People between the ages of 12 and 17 years old
- People who can speak and read English
- People willing to commit to 5–10 text messages and/or phone or video calls (each 20–30 minutes long) with a peer mentor over 15 weeks
As a mentor (older participant):
- People who have been diagnosed with a heart condition
- People between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- People who can speak and read English
- People who have been recommended as a good mentor by a member of their healthcare team, based on maturity and emotional stability
- People willing to complete approximately 20 hours of peer mentor training online and then mentor a younger participant over 15 weeks
- People assessed by a healthcare provider as having good communication skills
- People with previous experience in a professional setting such as camp counselling, a part-time job, or volunteering (this is considered an advantage, not a requirement)
Who may not be able to join:
- People with significant cognitive (thinking or learning) difficulties, as assessed by a qualified healthcare provider
- People who currently have an active mental health diagnosis, such as major depression or generalised anxiety disorder, that may affect their quality of life assessment or their ability to manage their heart care (confirm with trial site)
- People who are already taking part in another peer support or self-management programme
