Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 70 years old
  • Your doctor has said you qualify for weight loss procedures (either endoscopic or surgical)
  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 35 kg/m² (a measure of body weight relative to height — your doctor can calculate this for you)
  • You are in excellent mental health
  • You are able to read, understand, and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
  • You are able to come back to the trial site for all scheduled follow-up visits

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have an untreated H. pylori infection (a type of stomach bacterial infection)
  • You have gastroparesis, a condition where your stomach empties too slowly
  • You are currently an active smoker
  • You have used opioid pain medications (such as morphine or codeine) at any point in the last 12 months
  • You have previously had surgery on the valve between your stomach and small intestine (pyloromyotomy or pyloroplasty)
  • You have a blockage anywhere in your digestive tract
  • You have a serious blood clotting disorder
  • You have enlarged veins in your stomach or food pipe, or a related stomach condition caused by liver problems
  • You are currently pregnant or have recently given birth
  • You have any inflammatory condition of the digestive tract, such as Crohn's disease, severe acid damage to the food pipe, or active stomach or intestinal ulcers
  • You have or have had cancer or pre-cancerous conditions affecting the stomach
  • You have serious heart or lung disease, a history of heart disease, a heart attack in the last 6 months, poorly controlled high blood pressure, or regularly need to take anti-inflammatory pain medicines (NSAIDs)
  • You are currently breastfeeding
  • You have had any previous surgery on your digestive system
  • You have any serious health condition unrelated to your weight that could make an endoscopy (a camera procedure) risky for you
  • You experience ongoing long-term stomach or abdominal pain
  • You have active psychological or mental health issues that would prevent you from taking part in a lifestyle change program
  • You have a known hormone-related condition that affects your weight, such as an uncontrolled underactive thyroid
  • You are unable to give informed consent to take part in the study
  • You currently take any medication that could interfere with weight loss
  • You currently take any medication that could affect how quickly your stomach empties
  • You have any other condition that the trial doctors believe could make it difficult for you to fully take part in or complete the study (confirm with trial site)
