Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years old or older and have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- You are currently taking a medication called methotrexate (with or without other similar RA medications) at a steady dose for at least 4 weeks, and you are either about to start a drug called abatacept, or you are staying on your current stable RA medications
- You meet standard medical criteria for an RA diagnosis, or you are being treated for RA even if you fall just short of those criteria, or you have joint damage typical of RA shown on imaging
- You have never received abatacept or rituximab; and if you previously took a JAK inhibitor, you stopped it more than one month ago; or if you took an IL-6 inhibitor, you stopped it at least 3 months ago
- If you take a steroid called prednisone, your daily dose is no more than 10 mg, and you have not had a steroid injection within 4 weeks of your first study visit or before your 3- or 6-month check-in
- Your RA is currently active enough to qualify, depending on which part of the study you join (confirm with trial site for specific activity levels required)
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you must be using an acceptable form of contraception (such as the pill or other hormonal methods) throughout the study
- Healthy volunteers with no autoimmune or inflammatory joint disease may also be eligible to join as a comparison group
Who may not be able to join:
- You have serious complications from RA (such as inflammation around the heart or major organ involvement) that may need urgent treatment changes
- You have another autoimmune or inflammatory disease (such as lupus) in addition to RA
- You have another serious ongoing illness, such as a terminal cancer
- Your BMI (body mass index, a measure of body weight relative to height) is below 18 or above 40
- You have previously been treated with rituximab or abatacept
- You have taken any experimental medication within the past 28 days
- You have received a live vaccine within 2 weeks before the study starts, or you are unwilling to avoid live vaccines during the study
- You are a woman who could become pregnant and your pregnancy test is positive at enrollment, or you are unwilling or unable to use contraception while taking methotrexate during the study
- You are considered part of a vulnerable population (confirm with trial site for details)
