Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 12 to 18 who have been diagnosed with atopic eczema by a Consultant Dermatologist, or healthy individuals without eczema (as a comparison group).
  • People with atopic eczema whose condition requires treatment that works through the immune system, or those currently managing eczema with creams or ointments applied to the skin.
  • People who have provided written agreement to take part — either signed by the patient themselves, or by a parent or legal guardian, depending on age and understanding.
  • People who are willing to follow all the requirements of the study.
  • People with a sufficient understanding of English to complete written questionnaires and follow instructions during MRI scans, appropriate to their age.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People, or whose parent or guardian, does not sufficiently understand what the study involves.
  • People who have any reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan — for example, metal implants or other metal in the body from surgery or injury (a safety questionnaire completed by a radiographer would assess this before any scan takes place).
  • People whose ability to complete the MRI parts of the study is limited by a condition such as severe claustrophobia, as determined by the study investigator.
  • People who have been diagnosed by a sleep medicine specialist with a formal sleep disorder that requires medication taken by mouth or injection.
  • People whose sleep is significantly disrupted by another illness — physical or mental — other than atopic eczema, where the study investigator considers this would meaningfully affect the sleep-related parts of the study.
  • People with a past or current history of substance misuse.
  • People taking medications that the study investigator believes would affect the quality of the sleep studies.
