Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have cochlear implants in both ears (either fitted at the same time or one after the other), and you wear both processors for at least 6 hours a day, every day, over the course of a month.
- You were born with severe or profound hearing loss in both ears and received your first cochlear implant at 36 months of age (3 years old) or younger.
- OR you developed severe or profound hearing loss in both ears over time or due to an event (there is no age restriction for when you received your implant in this case).
- Your cochlear implant settings are stable — meaning you are no longer working through a series of gradually changing programmes.
- You have had at least two routine hearing check appointments showing stable hearing levels, with no further programme changes needed (this applies if you have had a cochlear implant device replaced).
- You are between 8 and 16 years old (inclusive).
Who may not be able to join:
- You or your parent/legal guardian does not speak or understand English well enough to take part in the assessments.
- You have an intellectual disability that would make it difficult to understand the trial or answer assessment questions.
- You have another health condition that would affect your ability to take part in the trial activities or assessments.
- You have a hearing profile that would make it difficult to take part in the trial activities or assessments (confirm with trial site).
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial that could affect your hearing results or your ability to participate.
- You are currently receiving, or are expected to receive, any treatment that might affect your hearing or change your implant settings.
- You are not willing to agree to take part in the trial activities.
- You are waiting to have a cochlear implant replaced due to device failure or infection.
- You do not wear both cochlear implant processors for at least 6 hours a day over the course of a month.
- You live full-time at a boarding school.
- There are unresolvable problems found with your implant device that make one of the implants unusable.
- You are pregnant.
- You have been diagnosed with epilepsy or have had any type of seizures.
