Who might be able to join this trial:
For adults (with a cochlear implant):
- You are at least 18 years old
- American English is your first language
- You wear a cochlear implant made by Advanced Bionics (Clarion Hi-Focus I or a newer model), Cochlear, or MED-EL
For children (with a cochlear implant):
- Your child is at least 3 months old
- American English is their first language
- Your child wears a cochlear implant made by Advanced Bionics (Clarion Hi-Focus I or a newer model), Cochlear, or MED-EL
For people with normal hearing:
- You have normal hearing with no significant history of hearing-related problems
- You are able to give your own informed consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
For cochlear implant users:
- You are not able to give informed consent to participate in the study
- You do not meet certain additional requirements for the specific part of the study you would be joining, such as the age when hearing loss began, when the implant was fitted, how long you experienced deafness, or the number of working parts in your implant (confirm with trial site)
- You are unable to complete the tasks or activities required by the study
For people with normal hearing:

- You have hearing loss or a significant history of hearing-related problems
- You are unable to complete the tasks or activities required by the study
