Who might be able to join this trial:
For patients with a gastrointestinal condition ("Cases"):
- You are between 8 and 25 years old (male or female)
- If you are female and are 11 or older, or have started your period, you must have a negative pregnancy test
- You have been diagnosed with a functional gastrointestinal and/or motility disorder, OR you are already scheduled to have one of certain specific gut-related tests or treatments as part of your regular medical care (confirm with trial site for the full list)
- Your body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) is below 35
- A parent or guardian has given permission, and you have agreed to take part if old enough to do so
For healthy comparison participants ("Controls"):
- You are between 8 and 25 years old (male or female)
- If you are female and are 11 or older, or have started your period, you must have a negative pregnancy test
- You do not currently have a diagnosed functional gastrointestinal disorder and are not planning to have any of the related procedures soon
- Your body mass index is below 35
- Siblings of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders may also be eligible
- A parent or guardian has given permission, and you have agreed to take part if old enough to do so
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a history of skin allergies or strong sensitivity to cosmetics or lotions, or you currently have open wounds, sores, or inflamed skin on your stomach area
- You are pregnant
- You have a condition where your doctor does not recommend fasting (going without food for a period of time)
- You have food allergies that affect the standard test meal used in the study, and no suitable alternative meal can be provided
- You are unable to lie back in a relaxed, reclined position for the full length of the study visit
- You have a significant developmental delay or cognitive impairment that makes it difficult to answer questions about how you are feeling
- Your gut movement problems are limited only to the esophagus (the tube from your throat to your stomach) in a way that makes the stomach-area testing unhelpful for the study (confirm with trial site)
- The study team has concerns that you or your parent/guardian may have difficulty following the study schedule or instructions
