Who might be able to join this trial:

If you are a healthy volunteer:

  • You are a woman aged 18 or older
  • You can read and understand English and are able to give your own consent to take part
  • You have never had chronic pain and do not currently have it
  • You do not regularly take any pain-relieving or mood-affecting medications (the research team will review this)
  • You do not take opioid medications (such as prescription painkillers like codeine or morphine)

If you have chronic pain:

  • You are a woman aged 18 or older
  • You can read and understand English and are able to give your own consent to take part
  • You have been told by a doctor, or believe yourself, that you have fibromyalgia and/or chronic pain
  • You either currently use opioid pain medications (to join the opioid group) OR you do not use opioid pain medications (to join the non-opioid group)

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have difficulty fully taking part in behavioural tasks or attending follow-up appointments over time
  • You have a reason why you cannot safely have an MRI scan (for example, certain metal implants — confirm with trial site)
  • There is any other reason the research team feels your participation could be harmful to you or could affect the study (confirm with trial site)
  • You are male
