Who might be able to join this trial:
If you are a healthy volunteer:
- You are a woman aged 18 or older
- You can read and understand English and are able to give your own consent to take part
- You have never had chronic pain and do not currently have it
- You do not regularly take any pain-relieving or mood-affecting medications (the research team will review this)
- You do not take opioid medications (such as prescription painkillers like codeine or morphine)
If you have chronic pain:
- You are a woman aged 18 or older
- You can read and understand English and are able to give your own consent to take part
- You have been told by a doctor, or believe yourself, that you have fibromyalgia and/or chronic pain
- You either currently use opioid pain medications (to join the opioid group) OR you do not use opioid pain medications (to join the non-opioid group)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have difficulty fully taking part in behavioural tasks or attending follow-up appointments over time
- You have a reason why you cannot safely have an MRI scan (for example, certain metal implants — confirm with trial site)
- There is any other reason the research team feels your participation could be harmful to you or could affect the study (confirm with trial site)
- You are male
