Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with COPD, meaning they have a smoking history of more than 10 pack-years (a measure of how much someone has smoked over time) and either a specific breathing test result showing reduced airflow, or a chest CT scan showing signs of emphysema (lung damage)
• People who have been diagnosed with heart failure, with either reduced or preserved heart pumping function, and whose symptoms fall within a certain range of severity (Class 1–3 on a standard heart failure scale)
• People whose doctor has given them clearance to take part in an exercise program
• People who have an active email address and access to a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone that supports the Fitbit app

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have had a flare-up or worsening of their COPD or heart failure in the past month
• People who are unable to walk
• People who are unable to collect step count data on at least 7 out of 14 days during the baseline period at the start of the trial
• People who are currently enrolled in a cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation program
