Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with a type of heart attack called a STEMI, confirmed by clinical assessment and a heart tracing (ECG)
- People who have had a successful procedure to open the blocked heart artery (called PCI), with a modern type of stent placed, as determined by the treating doctor
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a known allergy or medical reason to avoid aspirin, ticagrelor, or prasugrel (common blood-thinning medications)
- People who had a previous artery-opening procedure (PCI) or heart attack less than 12 months ago
- People who have previously had heart surgery
- People who are already participating in another clinical cardiology study, or a study involving blood clotting or platelet research (unless that study's blood-thinning treatment has ended for clinical reasons, such as because of the current heart attack)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are currently taking oral blood-thinning tablets (oral anticoagulants)
- People who received a specific type of strong blood-thinning injection called a GPIIb/IIIa inhibitor during the heart procedure
- People who have a planned surgical procedure within 12 months of the heart artery procedure
- People whose kidneys are functioning below a certain level (creatinine clearance below 30mL/min) or who are on dialysis
- People whose PCI procedure was performed to treat a blocked stent (stent thrombosis)
- People where the stent result was considered less than satisfactory by the heart specialist who performed the procedure
- People with a life expectancy of less than 13 months
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan or have medical reasons to avoid one — this applies only to those in the heart MRI sub-group of the study (confirm with trial site)
