Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been recommended for surgery on either your aortic valve or mitral valve (one valve only, not combined with other heart procedures)
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are willing and able to give written consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You have been diagnosed with coronary artery disease (blocked or narrowed heart arteries) within the last 6 months
- You have an allergy to gadolinium (a contrast dye used in MRI scans)
- You have a cochlear implant (a device surgically placed in the ear to help with hearing)
- You have a deep brain stimulation device (an implanted device used to treat conditions such as Parkinson's disease)
- You have any other personal reason that would make having an MRI scan unsafe or not possible — for example, severe claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) (confirm with trial site)
- Your kidneys are not working well enough, specifically if your kidney filtration rate is below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- You experience serious complications during surgery that may cause damage to the heart muscle (this would mean leaving the study after it has started)
- Your surgery needs to be extended to include other parts of the heart, such as additional valves, the aorta, or the heart muscle (this could mean leaving the study after it has started)
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
