Who might be able to join this trial:
- People living with HIV who are 18 years of age or older and have been diagnosed with early-stage syphilis
- People whose syphilis has been confirmed through two specific blood tests (called RPR and TPPA) that show signs of active infection
Who may not be able to join:
- People living with HIV whose RPR blood test result is below a level of 4
- People who have taken certain antibiotics (such as penicillin, some cephalosporins, doxycycline, or macrolides) in the past 4 weeks that can fight the bacteria that causes syphilis
- People who have a known or suspected infection that would require treatment with those same types of antibiotics
- People who have tested positive for certain other sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia or M. genitalium) and were already treated with doxycycline or a macrolide antibiotic for those infections
- People who have had a bad reaction or intolerance to penicillin or doxycycline in the past
- People who have already taken part in this same study before
- People who are pregnant
