Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are over 18 years of age
- People who are receiving care from a surgeon at MU Health Care
- People who are having weight loss surgery through the Weight Management and Metabolic Center
- People whose body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) falls between 30 and 80
- People whose insurance covers weight loss surgery under their policy's criteria, or who plan to pay for the procedure themselves
- People who are scheduled for one of these weight loss surgeries: laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revisional weight loss surgery, or duodenal switch (or a related procedure)
- People who are willing to have blood samples collected before and after surgery at set time points, or at a minimum allow their medical information to be recorded
- People who are willing to have their health information entered into a research database
- People who are already taking a GLP-1 agonist (a type of medication used for weight or blood sugar management) as part of their regular medical care, and whose medical team is willing to either continue or stop that medication after surgery depending on which group they are assigned to
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant
- People who do not wish to participate
- People who are under 18 years of age
- People whose insurance does not cover the procedure and who are not interested in paying for it themselves
- People who are not currently taking a GLP-1 agonist medication as part of their regular medical care
- People who are unwilling to attend the required follow-up appointments after surgery
- People who are unwilling to stop or continue their GLP-1 agonist medication depending on which group they are randomly assigned to (note: people in this situation may still be able to participate as a non-randomised participant — confirm with trial site)
