Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a confirmed HIV infection
- People whose HIV has progressed to AIDS, meaning their CD4+ immune cell count is below 200 cells/ul and/or they have developed an AIDS-related opportunistic infection
- People between 18 and 65 years of age
- People who have been diagnosed with either severe pneumonia (based on 2021 American Thoracic Society and Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines) or septic shock, a serious condition where infection causes dangerous drops in blood pressure (based on Chinese critical care guidelines)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have lesions or abnormalities affecting the brain or central nervous system, serious liver disease, or scarring of the liver (cirrhosis)
- People who have any tumour or cancer, whether related to AIDS or not
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have serious pre-existing conditions affecting the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys
- People with a history of alcohol abuse or drug use
- People whose overall health condition, in the trial doctor's judgement, would affect the ability to properly complete or evaluate the trial
