Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 55 and 75 years old
- People with mild to moderate hearing loss that developed in adulthood, based on a standard hearing test result in their better ear
- People whose hearing loss is at a level where hearing aids could help, shown by being able to correctly repeat at least 60% of words in a quiet environment (in the better ear)
- People with a type of mild memory impairment (called amnestic mild cognitive impairment), confirmed through specific memory and thinking tests with scores falling within defined ranges
- People who have a family member, friend, or carer available to assist with certain memory and daily living assessments during the study
- People who live in the community (not in a care facility)
- People who are fluent in English or Spanish
- People who are able to remain available in the local area for the full duration of the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People with hearing loss that was present from birth, is linked to a known genetic cause, or began before middle age (before age 45)
- People who have already been diagnosed with dementia
- People who have difficulty carrying out two or more basic daily activities (such as dressing or bathing)
- People who currently use or have regularly used hearing aids in the past 6 months (beyond very brief trials)
- People who are not willing to wear hearing aids for at least 8 hours per day
- People who have a medical condition that makes hearing aid use unsafe (for example, an actively draining ear)
- People with vision problems that remain significant even with glasses or contact lenses, based on a specific vision chart test
- People with a type of hearing loss caused by a blockage or structural problem in the ear that cannot be treated, where the gap between two types of hearing test measurements is above a certain level across multiple sound frequencies in both ears (confirm with trial site)
