Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who are admitted to an emergency department
- People who have a build-up of fluid around the lungs, detected by an ultrasound, chest X-ray, or CT scan
- People for whom a doctor has determined that draining the fluid is medically necessary — either to relieve symptoms or to find out why the fluid is there
- People who do not have any medical reasons that would make draining the fluid unsafe in an emergency department setting (for example, being on blood-thinning medication)
Who may not be able to join:
- People experiencing severe, life-threatening difficulty breathing
- People who are unable to give their consent to participate
- People who have previously had a procedure to permanently seal the space around their lungs (pleurodesis)
- People whose fluid around the lungs does not appear to move freely, is divided into pockets, or where a serious infection of that fluid (empyema) is suspected
- People who have already taken part in this trial before
- People where the decision to drain the fluid has already been made by the radiology department, making random assignment to a treatment group not possible
