Who might be able to join this trial:
If you have sleep apnea (Cases):
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- You have been diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea (meaning your breathing stops or becomes shallow at least 15 times per hour during sleep)
- You are willing to use a PAP machine (a breathing device worn during sleep) as part of the trial
If you do not have sleep apnea (Controls):
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- You have been confirmed to not have sleep apnea (fewer than 5 breathing disruptions per hour during sleep)
Who may not be able to join:
If you have sleep apnea (Cases):
- You are currently using a PAP machine or any other treatment for sleep apnea
- You currently use oxygen at home
- Your blood pressure medications have been changed in the last 3 months
- Your sleep study showed a specific unusual breathing pattern called Cheyne-Stokes Respiration (confirm with trial site)
- Your sleep apnea is mainly caused by signals from the brain rather than a physical blockage (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant
- You have severe kidney disease that requires dialysis or you have had a kidney transplant
- You have had any organ transplant
- You regularly sleep less than 5 hours on weeknights
- You currently work night shifts
If you do not have sleep apnea (Controls):
- You currently use oxygen at home
- You are pregnant
- You have severe kidney disease that requires dialysis or you have had a kidney transplant
- You have had any organ transplant
- You regularly sleep less than 5 hours on weeknights
- You currently work night shifts
