Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 60 years of age or older
- You are scheduled to have heart surgery that involves a heart-lung bypass machine
- You are expected to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after your surgery
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to the study drug (dexmedetomidine) or its inactive version used in the trial
- You have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a related memory condition, severe cognitive impairment, or are currently experiencing confusion or delirium
- You have severe liver failure (confirm with trial site)
- You have serious brain damage caused by a physical injury or lack of oxygen to the brain
- Your surgery requires your blood circulation to be completely stopped during the procedure

- You are blind, deaf, or unable to communicate in English
- Your personal circumstances may make it difficult to stay in contact for follow-up visits, such as experiencing homelessness, an active psychotic disorder, or substance misuse
- You are already taking part in another clinical study that may interfere with this one, as judged by the research team
