Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 80 years old.
- People who have both bowel cancer (colorectal cancer) and liver metastases (cancer that has spread to the liver) present at the time of assessment.
- People whose primary bowel tumour, located in the colon or upper part of the rectum, can be surgically removed.
- People with fewer than 5 liver metastases that a specialist medical team has assessed as treatable by surgery and/or a heat-based destruction technique (such as radiofrequency or microwave ablation).
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose primary bowel tumour cannot be surgically removed.
- People whose primary tumour has grown extensively into surrounding tissues (described medically as T4 stage).
- People whose primary tumour is in the lower part of the rectum and would require a specific type of surgery that removes the rectum and anus entirely (called abdominoperineal resection).
- People experiencing a blocked bowel or a bowel blockage that is about to occur.
- People whose primary tumour has caused a perforation (a hole in the bowel wall) or significant bleeding.
- People whose primary tumour has already been treated with a bowel stent (a small tube placed to keep the bowel open).
- People who would need removal of more than two adjoining sections of the liver.
- People whose liver metastases are planned to be treated with a specific electrical destruction technique called irreversible electroporation (IRE).
- People who have cancer that has spread to the lungs and cannot be surgically removed.
- People who have cancer that has spread to areas of the body other than the liver (except for lung metastases that can be surgically removed).
- People whose general physical health and ability to function is significantly reduced, based on a standard medical scoring scale (ECOG score of 3 or higher) (confirm with trial site).
