Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You have been definitively diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS — a condition such as a heart attack or unstable chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart)
  • You are able and willing to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have had a type of heart attack caused by something other than a blocked artery (for example, caused by a fast heart rate, low blood pressure, anaemia, coronary spasm, or a blood clot travelling to the heart) (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a heart valve problem that doctors think will likely need surgery
  • You have had a cancer other than skin cancer in the past 3 years
  • You have inflammatory bowel disease or ongoing, long-term diarrhoea
  • You have a history of stomach ulcers or previous bleeding in the stomach
  • You have a muscle disease, or repeated blood tests have shown a muscle-related enzyme (creatine kinase) at more than 3 times the normal level (not related to your heart attack)
  • You have ongoing significant blood abnormalities shown on at least two blood tests, such as low red blood cell levels, very high or very low red blood cell concentration, low white blood cell count, or low platelet count
  • Your kidneys are not working well enough, based on a specific measure of kidney function (eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73m²) (confirm with trial site)
  • You have significant liver problems, including abnormal liver enzyme levels combined with high bilirubin levels, or severe liver disease affecting blood clotting (not related to your heart attack)
  • You have a decline in mental ability that stops you from carrying out basic daily activities on your own
  • You have a problem with drug or alcohol misuse
  • You are already taking, or planning to take, other medicines that suppress the immune system
  • You need to take colchicine long-term for another medical reason
  • You have had a known or suspected allergic reaction to colchicine
  • You are currently taking certain strong medications that interact with colchicine (such as cyclosporine, some antifungal, antiviral, or antibiotic medicines like erythromycin or clarithromycin) and there is no suitable alternative medicine available
