Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been recommended for a cochlear implant (in one or both ears, either at the same time or one after the other) due to severe to profound hearing loss in both ears, where understanding speech remains very difficult even with hearing aids
- People who are able to understand the study information and sign a written consent form
- People who are enrolled in the French social security system
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not speak French
- People whose hearing loss is caused by certain conditions known to lead to poorer outcomes, such as auditory nerve disorders, profound deafness present from birth, sudden profound hearing loss immediately following meningitis, or a specific type of benign tumour near the ear to be implanted
- People where it would not be possible to measure the cochlear implant's effect on its own — for example, those with hearing loss in only one ear or hearing loss that changes over time
- People whose surgery would require a specific type of electrode (called a perimodiolar electrode)
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have electronic devices directly connected to their brain or nervous system
- People already taking part in another interventional clinical study (confirm with trial site)
- People under legal guardianship or curatorship, or those who are not legally free to make their own decisions
