Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are military Veterans, male or female, of any racial or ethnic background
• People who are between 18 and 60 years old
• People who have been close enough to a high-intensity blast (such as from an RPG, IED, or mortar) to feel the heat or pressure from it
• People who score 20 or higher on a hearing difficulty questionnaire called the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA)

• People whose hearing loss at any tested frequency is not worse than a moderate level (confirm with trial site for exact thresholds)
• People whose hearing levels in the two ears are fairly similar to each other across lower-pitched frequencies
• People who are native English speakers
• People who score at least 25 out of 30 on a standard memory and thinking assessment called the Mini Mental State Exam

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a type of hearing loss caused by a problem in the ear canal or middle ear, or who have another diagnosed ear condition
• People who have a long-term illness or who take medication that could affect hearing or the ability to complete study tasks
• People who are unable to perform the tasks required by the study
• People who have a pacemaker, metal clips, metal implants, or any other reason that makes MRI scanning unsafe for them — though these individuals may still be able to take part in the non-MRI parts of the trial (confirm with trial site)
• People who have previously used hearing aids before joining the study
