Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are aged 18 to 80 years old
  • You have agreed to take part and signed a consent form before any treatment begins
  • Your general health and ability to carry out daily activities is rated as good (a score of 0 or 1 on a standard doctor's scale) and you are expected to live at least 12 weeks
  • Based on scans, symptoms, and other tests, you have been diagnosed with a tumour in or around the pancreas, the area where the bile duct meets the small intestine, the duodenum, or the lower part of the bile duct — and you need a specific major operation called a pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure)
  • Your heart, lungs, blood system, and immune system do not have serious problems
  • Your blood counts (white blood cells, neutrophils, platelets, and haemoglobin) are at or above certain minimum levels based on a blood test
  • Your liver and kidney function results from blood tests are within acceptable ranges
  • Your blood clotting results are within acceptable ranges
  • You are able and willing to attend all required appointments and follow the study plan
  • Your doctor's assessment suggests you have an intermediate or high chance of developing a specific complication (a leak from the pancreas) after surgery, based on a recognised scoring tool

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your cancer has spread to distant parts of the body such as the liver, lungs, or abdominal lining, or has spread extensively to nearby blood vessels or major arteries
  • You have moderate to severe heart failure (confirm with trial site)
  • You have uncontrolled high blood pressure (confirm with trial site for specific thresholds)
  • Your kidneys are failing and you need dialysis
  • You currently have a serious active infection
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have had a major operation within the 4 weeks before joining, or have not yet fully recovered from a recent major operation
  • You currently have another type of cancer (though you may still be eligible if a previous cancer was fully treated more than 3 years ago)
  • You have had bleeding in your upper digestive tract within the 4 weeks before surgery, or have an ongoing bleeding risk that cannot be treated
  • You are unwilling or unable to follow the study requirements or to sign the consent form
