Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 22 years or older who are scheduled to have coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery — a type of open-heart surgery to improve blood flow to the heart — using a heart-lung bypass machine
- People who have been diagnosed with heart failure where the heart's pumping function is reduced
- People being admitted for planned (elective) or urgent (but not emergency) surgery
- People whose heart scan, done within one month before the planned surgery, shows the heart is pumping between 20% and 40% of its capacity
- People whose heart is beating in a normal, steady rhythm (called sinus rhythm)
- People having any number of heart vessels bypassed, as long as the main front artery of the heart (the left anterior descending artery) is included
- People who are able to give written consent to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who also need heart valve replacement surgery at the same time
- People having CABG surgery without the use of a heart-lung bypass machine (called off-pump CABG)
- People needing emergency CABG surgery
- People with a history of an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (whether it comes and goes or is permanent)
- People with a history of certain fast heart rhythms that originate in a specific part of the heart's electrical system (confirm with trial site)
- People who are not able to give informed consent
- People who have tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days before the planned surgery (by PCR or rapid lateral flow test)
- People whose resting heart rate is above 100 beats per minute
- People who are pregnant
- People who have an implanted pacemaker or defibrillator device
- People from whom a specific type of heart monitoring signal (called a Uscom signal) cannot be successfully obtained (confirm with trial site)
