Who may be able to join
- People between 18 and 55 years of age.
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) between 18.5 and 30.
- People who are able to provide a legally valid signed consent to participate.
- For the depression group: people currently experiencing a major depressive episode as diagnosed using standard psychiatric criteria (DSM-5).
Who may not be able to join

- People who have ever been diagnosed with, or currently have, a brain injury, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe substance or alcohol use disorder (tobacco use is an exception), coronary heart disease, or stroke.
- People who have been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder, a somatic symptom disorder (a condition where physical symptoms are linked to psychological distress), or an eating disorder within the 12 months before the trial begins.
- People for whom MRI scanning is not safe — for example, those with metal implants or claustrophobia — or for whom the ear stimulation device used in the trial (tVNS) is not suitable, such as people with piercings, or sore or broken skin on the outer right ear.
- Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People whose ability to give informed consent is unclear.
