Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with chronic tinnitus:
- People who have had tinnitus for 6 months or longer
- People aged 20 to 55 years old, any gender, and right-handed
- People whose ear canals are clear and whose eardrums are intact
- People whose average hearing level in both ears is within a mild range (below 35 decibels of hearing loss)
- People who are able to communicate and understand normally
- People who have no reasons that would prevent them from undergoing fNIRS brain scanning (a non-invasive brain imaging technique using light)
For healthy volunteers (comparison group):
- People with no tinnitus, no hearing problems, and no other ear conditions
- People in good general health with no history of mental illness or nervous system conditions
- People aged 20 to 55 years old, any gender, and right-handed
- People whose ear canals are clear and whose eardrums are intact
- People who are able to communicate and understand normally
- People who have no reasons that would prevent them from undergoing fNIRS brain scanning
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of drug dependence or alcohol addiction
- People with serious brain or nervous system conditions, or major heart and blood vessel conditions
- People with physical brain or head injuries (such as traumatic brain injury)
- People with inner ear or hearing nerve conditions, such as sudden hearing loss, Ménière's disease, otosclerosis, or acoustic neuroma
- People with outer or middle ear conditions, such as outer ear infection or acute or chronic middle ear infection
- People with heightened sensitivity to sound (auditory hypersensitivity)
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People who have metal implants in their body, or who otherwise cannot undergo fNIRS brain scanning
