Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are receiving your first ever pacemaker (either a single- or dual-chamber device) because your heart beats too slowly due to a serious electrical conduction problem between the upper and lower chambers of the heart, or because you have an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) causing your heart to beat dangerously slowly (fewer than 45 beats per minute).
- Your heart's pumping strength, measured by an ultrasound scan done within 7 days before your pacemaker is fitted, must be above 50% (this is considered a normal or near-normal pumping function).
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are not expected to live for more than 12 months due to any serious illness.
- You have a severe problem with one or more of your heart valves that needs to be treated or repaired.
- You have had unstable chest pain, a heart attack, a procedure to unblock heart arteries, or heart valve surgery or a valve procedure in the 90 days before your pacemaker is fitted.
- You are already taking part in another clinical trial that could affect the results of this study.
