Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be an adult (over 18 years old)
- You must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than four days
- Your circulation and blood flow must be stable and under control
- You must have a confirmed problem with how your gut absorbs food, checked using two specific tests: an ultrasound scan of the stomach and a paracetamol absorption test
Who may not be able to join:
- People using a non-invasive breathing support machine (such as a mask-based ventilator, rather than a tube down the throat)
- People who cannot receive tube feeding for more than 48 hours after being admitted
- People who have had gut or bowel surgery in the last 3 months
- People with a history of poor nutrient absorption or inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- People with short bowel syndrome (a condition where part of the small intestine is missing or not working)
- People with anorexia nervosa
- People who have bleeding in the gut or digestive tract
- People with cirrhosis (serious liver scarring)
- People who have had a traumatic brain injury
- People who have had bleeding around the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage)
- People with cancer
- People who have been resuscitated after a cardiac arrest
- People who regularly take steroid medications as part of their ongoing treatment
- Women who are pregnant
