Who might be able to join this trial:

• You must be an adult (over 18 years old)
• You must have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than four days
• Your circulation and blood flow must be stable and under control
• You must have a confirmed problem with how your gut absorbs food, checked using two specific tests: an ultrasound scan of the stomach and a paracetamol absorption test

Who may not be able to join:

• People using a non-invasive breathing support machine (such as a mask-based ventilator, rather than a tube down the throat)
• People who cannot receive tube feeding for more than 48 hours after being admitted
• People who have had gut or bowel surgery in the last 3 months
• People with a history of poor nutrient absorption or inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
• People with short bowel syndrome (a condition where part of the small intestine is missing or not working)
• People with anorexia nervosa
• People who have bleeding in the gut or digestive tract
• People with cirrhosis (serious liver scarring)
• People who have had a traumatic brain injury
• People who have had bleeding around the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage)
• People with cancer
• People who have been resuscitated after a cardiac arrest
• People who regularly take steroid medications as part of their ongoing treatment
• Women who are pregnant
