- You had normal hearing and normal speech and language development as a young child
- If you are a younger participant with typical hearing: your hearing test results show good hearing across a range of sound frequencies (no significant hearing loss)
- If you use a cochlear implant: you have been using it for at least 6 months
- If you are 55 or older and do not have a cochlear implant: your hearing is within an acceptable range, with only a mild drop allowed at higher sound frequencies
- If you use a cochlear implant: you can correctly recognize spoken words in English at least 50% of the time
- You are a fluent speaker of North American English
- You do not have any language-learning difficulties or other cognitive disabilities
- You do not have a condition called auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (a specific type of hearing nerve problem — confirm with trial site if unsure)
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable to hold your gaze steady (keep your eyes focused in one direction)
- You have an eye condition that prevents your pupils from dilating (changing size) normally
- You are not fluent in understanding and speaking English
