Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with a current episode of unipolar depression, according to standard psychiatric diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5).
  • People whose psychiatrist or referring doctor has prescribed an antidepressant from one of two specific types — an SSRI or an alpha-2 antagonist — for their current depressive episode.
  • People who are 18 years of age or older.
  • People who are enrolled in a French social welfare/health coverage scheme and who speak French as their native language.
  • People who have received full information about the study and have signed a written consent form agreeing to participate.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have been diagnosed with an ongoing psychiatric condition other than major depressive disorder or an anxiety disorder, according to standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5).
  • People whose depression follows a seasonal pattern.
  • People who are currently already taking antidepressant medication.
  • People whose doctor has recommended an antidepressant other than an SSRI or alpha-2 antagonist.
  • People who are currently assessed as being at high risk of suicide.
  • People who have a retinal or eye condition that affects their vision, as measured by a standard vision chart (the Monoyer scale).
  • People who have a history of head injury, epilepsy, or other neurological conditions.
  • People who are currently participating in another interventional research study, or who are within an exclusion period following a previous study.
  • People who have an intellectual disability that would make it difficult or impossible for them to understand the study information or to participate.
  • People in specific protected categories under French public health law, including: pregnant women, women who have recently given birth, or breastfeeding mothers; people whose liberty has been restricted by a legal or administrative decision; people receiving involuntary psychiatric care; people admitted to a health or social care facility for reasons other than research; minors; adults under a legal protection order; and adults who are unable to give consent and are not covered by a legal protection measure.
  • People for whom the use of the study's ERG device would not be suitable, including those with an open wound in an area the device would cover, those with an implantable medical device such as a pacemaker, or those considered at high risk of contagion.

This study is not part of the standard drug-approval phase pathway (for example an observational, device, behavioural, or registry study), so a phase success rate does not apply.
