Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are female
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- You have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and meet the 2016 official diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia
- Your average pain level over the past 7 days has been 4 or higher on a 10-point scale
- You are willing to avoid starting new medications or treatments for your fibromyalgia while in the study
- You are able to travel to the study location for treatment sessions up to twice a week
- You are willing and able to follow all study procedures from start to finish
- You are able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
- You can speak, read, and write in English well enough to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- You have another condition that causes pain and involves the immune system, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease
- You have a history of a serious head injury where you lost consciousness
- You have nerve damage in your hands or feet (from a known cause) that interferes with everyday activities
- You regularly take opioid pain medicines, use marijuana daily, or have a history of substance abuse
- You take stimulant medications, such as those used for ADHD (for example, Adderall or Ritalin) or for staying awake (for example, modafinil)
- You are currently taking part in another medical treatment trial
- You take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen as needed on the day of a brain activity (EEG) test
- You have taken opioid pain medicines within 48 hours before a brain activity (EEG) test
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding (a pregnancy test will be done before brain activity testing sessions)
- You have a serious mental health condition such as schizophrenia, severe depression with thoughts of suicide, or a history of substance abuse within the past two years
- You have metal implants, surgical clips, staples, or certain metal dental materials that would make brain activity (EEG) testing unsafe (confirm with trial site)
- You have any condition or situation that the study team feels would prevent you from completing the study safely and reliably
- You already have significant knowledge of shamanism techniques, which could affect the study results
- You have any factors that would make it unsafe for you to receive the shamanism-based treatment used in this study (confirm with trial site)
- You have had vascular (blood vessel) surgery in your legs, or you currently have blood vessel problems in your legs
- You have heart or cardiovascular disease that is not well controlled
- You are involved in a workers' compensation claim, legal case, disability claim, or are receiving financial compensation related to your fibromyalgia
- You are unwilling or unable to sign a written consent form
