Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People diagnosed with liver cancer at a certain stage (Chinese Liver Cancer Staging Scheme, stage IIb–IIIa), or those at an earlier stage (Ia–IIa) whose treating doctor has determined that surgery, transplant, or ablation is not suitable or who do not wish to have those treatments
  • People whose liver is functioning at an acceptable level, known as Child-Pugh grade A or B (confirm with trial site)
  • People with a general health score of 0–2 on a standard medical scale, meaning they are able to carry out daily activities to at least a limited degree (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have at least one measurable liver tumour that has not previously been treated with embolisation, measuring between 1 and 10 cm
  • People who are willing to take part and have signed an informed consent form

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose target tumour has already been treated with embolisation, or who need to have other treatments combined at the same time
  • People whose cancer has spread widely throughout the liver or to other parts of the body
  • People with blood clotting problems, specifically where a standard clotting test result is more than 3 seconds above the normal upper limit
  • People with severely reduced kidney function (a measure called creatinine clearance below 30 ml/min)
  • People with severely reduced liver function, where certain liver enzyme levels are more than 5 times the normal upper limit
  • People whose main portal vein (the large blood vessel supplying the liver) is completely blocked with no alternative blood flow established
  • People with certain abnormal connections between blood vessels in the liver that cannot be corrected
  • People who are severely malnourished or who have a condition where the liver is unable to filter toxins, causing confusion or reduced consciousness
  • People who have an active infection at the time of the trial
  • People with significantly low white blood cell or platelet counts that cannot be corrected (white blood cells below 3.0×10⁹/L or platelets below 50×10⁹/L)
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People for whom the required medical procedure (guiding a thin tube to the correct blood vessel) would be technically very difficult
  • People where there is a serious risk that the treatment could accidentally affect blood vessels it is not meant to target
  • People with a severe allergy to contrast dye or the materials used in the embolisation procedure
  • People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial
  • People considered unsuitable by the doctor running the trial, for any other reason
