Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 or older who are being seen by NHS ear, nose, throat (ENT) or hearing services for tinnitus (ringing or noise in the ears) that is not caused by a heartbeat sound and is not linked to another underlying condition.
  • People who have been experiencing tinnitus for at least 3 months.
  • People who have access to a smartphone that can run an app called Oto, and are willing to use it.
  • People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form to take part in the trial.
  • People whose doctors would normally offer them a treatment called tinnitus retraining therapy (a structured program to help the brain learn to tune out tinnitus sounds) as part of their care.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose tinnitus has been found to have a specific physical cause, confirmed by an MRI (brain scan).
  • People who are currently receiving any other tinnitus treatments at the same time, including hearing aids or implants. (Note: having had tinnitus treatments in the past, such as a talking therapy called CBT, is acceptable.)
  • People who do not have a suitable smartphone to download the Oto app, or who feel they would not be able to use it.
