Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who were admitted to hospital for a serious heart condition called cardiogenic shock (when the heart cannot pump enough blood) between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2023
- People who, during that admission, were supported by a heart-lung bypass machine (ECMO) combined with either a balloon pump (IABP) or a small heart pump device (Impella), which together are sometimes called "ECMELLA"
Who may not be able to join:
- People who were receiving active emergency heart-lung resuscitation using a machine (called eCPR) at the time the ECMO device was inserted
- People who had a prolonged manual heart resuscitation (CPR) lasting more than 30 minutes before their cardiogenic shock treatment
- People with a serious, permanent brain injury
- People already known to have severe long-term heart muscle weakness (where the heart's pumping function was already very low), or who were already on a waiting list for a heart transplant or a surgically implanted heart pump (LVAD)
- People for whom inserting an Impella or balloon pump (IABP) device would not have been medically appropriate
- People who experienced a physical complication directly caused by a heart attack (such as a tear or rupture in the heart)
- People who were considered extremely critically ill with very little chance of survival (assessed using a specific medical severity score called SAPS above 90) (confirm with trial site)
- People with previously known severe long-term kidney or liver failure
- People under 18 years of age
