  • Children whose best corrected vision (with glasses or lenses) is 1.0 or better in each eye.
  • Children whose level of short-sightedness or long-sightedness in each eye falls within a specific range (-15 D to +2.0 D) (confirm with trial site).
  • Children whose astigmatism in each eye is less than -5.0 D.
  • Children where the difference in prescription between the two eyes is no more than -1.5 D (confirm with trial site).
  • Children who have no active eye inflammation, no significant cloudiness or scarring on the cornea, a normal corneal shape, and no signs of a condition called keratoconus.

  • Children and their parent or guardian who have been fully informed about the trial and have signed a consent form.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • Children over 6 years old whose best corrected vision in either eye is below 1.0, which may indicate a condition called lazy eye (amblyopia).
  • Children who have an active eye inflammation condition, such as uveitis.
  • Children whose short-sightedness is caused by another medical condition, a genetic disorder, or a connective tissue disease.
  • Children who have a moderate or severe drooping of the eyelid (ptosis).
  • Children who have been diagnosed with a congenital (present from birth) cataract or glaucoma.
  • Children who have other diseases affecting the back of the eye, beyond those directly related to short-sightedness.
  • Children who have previously had eye surgery or surgery to correct vision.
  • Children where the eye's internal structures are too cloudy to allow a clear photograph of the back of the eye.
  • Children who are unable to cooperate with eye photography or other examinations required by the trial.
  • Children who are unable to receive, or have a medical reason preventing them from receiving, eye drops used to temporarily relax the eye's focusing muscles (cycloplegia) (confirm with trial site).
  • Children who are in poor general health and would be unlikely to attend all required follow-up visits.
  • Children whose parent, guardian, or the child themselves declines to take part in the research.
  • Children whom the researchers judge to be unsuitable for the study for any other reason.
