Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who speak English and whose sleep apnea treatment with a hypoglossal nerve stimulator (HGNS) — a device implanted to treat sleep apnea — has been working well, meaning it has reduced their breathing interruptions during sleep by at least 50% to below a certain threshold
- People who have been using their HGNS device for at least 3 months and have used it for more than 20 hours per week over the past 4 weeks
- People who were not using any other sleep apnea treatment for at least one month before their HGNS device was switched on, or who had at least one month of untreated sleep apnea after the device was activated
Who may not be able to join:
- People who regularly use opioid (strong painkiller) medications, illicit drugs, or who have an alcohol dependency
- Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- People who work shift work, operate heavy machinery, or drive commercially as part of their job
- People who have a history of very severe daytime sleepiness (based on a specific questionnaire score), or who have been in a car accident or near-miss incident caused by drowsy driving in the year before joining the trial
- People with serious heart or lung conditions (such as needing home oxygen), serious liver, kidney, or cancer-related illness, a degenerative neurological condition, or an active or recent history of an eating disorder within the last 5 years
- People who are not able to give their own informed consent to participate
