Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been found, using a special heart imaging technique called OCT, to have hardened, calcium-containing deposits (calcified nodules) in one of their heart arteries (not a previously stented section), where a procedure to open the artery is being considered
- People whose heart condition is either a stable, long-term form of heart disease (chronic coronary syndrome) or a type of heart attack that does not show a specific pattern on an ECG (acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation) — this also includes people who have had a certain type of major heart attack (STEMI) and have a separate artery blockage being treated in a follow-up procedure
- People whose affected artery measures between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm in diameter at a point beyond the blockage
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose blockage is the direct cause of a major heart attack showing a specific ECG pattern (ST-elevation)
- People with disease in the main left coronary artery (the "left main")
- People whose blockage is inside a previously placed stent
- People where the imaging catheter (OCT) cannot be passed through the blockage even after a small balloon (up to 2 mm) has been used to open it slightly
- People whose blockage is at a point where the artery splits, and the side branch at that split is 2 mm or wider
- People who are in cardiogenic shock (when the heart is too weak to pump enough blood)
- People who need open-heart surgery or a heart valve procedure within three months before or after the artery-opening procedure
- People who are pregnant
- People whose life expectancy is less than one year
- People who cannot take the blood-thinning medications required after the procedure
- People whose heart artery disease is of a type where open-heart bypass surgery is the recommended treatment
- People with advanced kidney disease, or whose artery shape makes the OCT imaging technique unsuitable (confirm with trial site)
- People who are unable to give informed consent to participate
- People with an allergy to eggs or soy, which would prevent the use of one of the study treatments (OA)
