Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with a type of heart attack called an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
• People who have been assessed as having severe gum disease, which means having at least 5 teeth with significant loss of the tissue that attaches the gum to the tooth, at least one pocket between the gum and tooth measuring 6mm or deeper, and at least 8 teeth where the gums bleed when probed by a dental professional
• People aged 30 years or older
• People who have given written agreement to take part in the trial

Who may not be able to join:

• People under 30 years of age
• People who are HIV positive, have a chronic inflammatory condition, have a tumour-related illness, have drug dependence, are taking anti-seizure medications or immune-suppressing medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who have fewer than 8 remaining teeth
• People whose hospital stay has lasted more than 10 days, who have had another heart attack before being assigned to a treatment group in the trial, or who have experienced a blood clot in a coronary stent
• People who have declined to sign the informed consent form
