Who may be able to join
- Adults aged 18 or older who are able to give informed consent to participate.
- People who have been diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression (depression that has not responded to other treatments).
- People who have been recommended and approved by a psychiatrist to receive ketamine treatment as an outpatient (meaning they do not need to stay overnight in hospital).
- People who are currently receiving ketamine through an intravenous (IV) drip and whose doctor has prescribed at least 4 IV ketamine treatments per course.
- People who are mentally alert, aware of their surroundings, and able to watch immersive video content and answer questions.
- Female participants of childbearing age who are not using a medically recognised form of birth control (such as hormonal contraceptives, implants, injections, or intrauterine devices) must have a negative pregnancy test before treatment.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with a history of psychosis, certain other psychiatric conditions, psychotic depression, dissociative disorders, or a significant personality disorder, as assessed by a psychiatrist.
- People who have used non-prescribed substances (such as cannabis) or alcohol in the 48 hours before treatment.
- People with a history of substance misuse or dependence, including long-term alcohol misuse.
- People who have previously used ketamine.
- People currently experiencing severe confusion, memory loss, or delirium.
- People assessed by the study psychiatrist as being at acute (immediate) risk of suicide at the time of enrolment.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People who have previously had a sensitivity or allergic reaction to ketamine or similar medications.
- People with an unstable medical condition that may require assessment by an anaesthetic specialist (confirm with trial site).
- People with a history of raised pressure in the brain or a stroke.
- People who have had a major heart event (such as a heart attack) within the past 6 weeks.
- People who experience significant motion sickness, including from physical movement, visual motion, or virtual reality environments, as reported by the person themselves.
- People who are unable to communicate with the study team.
