People living with HIV (all HIV-positive groups):

• People who have tested positive for HIV-1
• People whose HIV is currently undetectable in their blood
• People who take their HIV medications consistently and as directed

People living with HIV who also use cannabis (PLWH + cannabis use group):

• People whose urine test shows recent cannabis use
• People who meet the clinical criteria for both cannabis use disorder and major depressive disorder, as assessed using a structured diagnostic interview (confirm with trial site)

Healthy comparison group (HIV-negative, no cannabis use):

• People who have tested negative for HIV-1
• People whose urine test shows no drug use
• People with no major physical or mental health diagnoses

HIV-positive only group (no cannabis use):

• People who have tested positive for HIV-1
• People whose urine test shows no drug use
• People with no major physical or mental health diagnoses

Cannabis use only group (HIV-negative):

• People who have tested negative for HIV-1
• People whose urine test shows recent cannabis use
• People who meet the clinical criteria for both cannabis use disorder and major depressive disorder, as assessed using a structured diagnostic interview (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

• People who currently meet the criteria for a moderate or severe substance use disorder involving cocaine, alcohol, opioids, sedatives, or nicotine
• People with a current or past history of cocaine or opioid use disorder
• People with a history of any psychotic disorder
• People currently diagnosed with bipolar disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• People who are currently experiencing psychosis, suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, or a manic episode
• People with significant underlying health conditions affecting the brain, kidneys, thyroid, or heart that could interfere with participation
• People currently taking medications known to affect stress hormone systems or immune function in the brain (confirm with trial site)
• People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or using hormonal contraception that affects the body's cortisol stress response
