Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are 60 years of age or older
  • People who have been diagnosed with sarcopenia (low muscle mass and/or weakness) according to the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria — this means having low muscle mass measured by a bone density scan, AND either a weak handgrip strength OR a slow walking speed (or both)
  • People who have been diagnosed with heart failure according to the European Society of Cardiology 2021 guidelines
  • People who fully understand the study and its purpose, and are willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had a recent acute heart or coronary event within the past 2 days
  • People with unstable coronary artery disease (blocked or narrowed heart arteries that are not yet stable)
  • People whose heart failure is currently not well controlled (decompensated)
  • People with a recent blood clot in the veins or arteries (including the lungs)
  • People with active inflammation of the heart muscle, the sac around the heart, or the heart valves
  • People with a tear in the wall of the aorta (the main blood vessel from the heart)
  • People with severe narrowing of the aortic valve that is causing symptoms
  • People who currently have an active infection or fever
  • People with dangerous or uncontrolled irregular heart rhythms, including newly developed atrial fibrillation or flutter
  • People with an uncontrolled fast resting heart rate (over 120 beats per minute)
  • People with a specific type of severe heart conduction problem called third-degree AV block
  • People with uncontrolled diabetes
  • People who experience a significant drop in blood pressure when standing (more than 20 mmHg), causing symptoms
  • People who have had increasing tiredness during exercise, or breathlessness at rest or with activity, in the past 3–5 days
  • People who show significant signs of reduced blood flow to the heart even with very light activity
  • People who have gained 1.8 kg or more in weight over the past 1–3 days
  • People who are currently receiving a continuous or intermittent infusion of a medication called Dobutamine
  • People whose blood pressure drops during exercise
  • People with the most severe stage of heart failure (classified as NYHA Class IV)
  • People with complex irregular heart rhythms at rest or during activity
  • People with a resting heart rate of 100 beats per minute or more while lying down
  • People with other health conditions that prevent them from doing physical exercise
  • People with a severe form of thickened heart muscle that obstructs blood flow (severe obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)
  • People who have taken part in a heart rehabilitation program within the last 6 months
  • People who do not agree to participate in the study
