Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have been diagnosed with a type of heart disease called dilated cardiomyopathy, where the heart is enlarged and pumping very poorly (confirm with trial site for specific measurements)
- Your doctor has decided you need temporary mechanical heart support using a specific device called an Impella 5.5, either while waiting for a heart transplant or while deciding if a transplant is the right option for you
Who may not be able to join:
- You have been using a specific heart-support balloon device (called an IABP) for more than 7 days before the Impella 5.5 is placed
- You are already using another type of mechanical heart-support device, including ECMO or similar equipment, before the Impella 5.5 is placed
- You were born with a structural heart defect (congenital heart disease)
- You have a different type of heart muscle disease, such as a stiff or thickened heart muscle, amyloidosis, or sarcoidosis
- A tissue sample from your heart has shown signs of sudden heart muscle inflammation (acute myocarditis)
- You have previously had a heart transplant
- You have an artificial aortic or mitral heart valve
- You have a known disease affecting the main large blood vessel from the heart, such as Marfan Syndrome (confirm with trial site for other related conditions)
- You have a blood clot inside the left chamber of your heart
- You have a tear or hole in the wall of your heart's left chamber
- You have fluid pressing on your heart (cardiac tamponade)
- You have a hole between the chambers of your heart
- The right side of your heart is failing severely and needs its own mechanical support device
- You have severe blood vessel disease in your legs or elsewhere that would make it impossible to safely place the Impella device
- You have recently had a stroke that has caused significant lasting effects on your abilities
- You have a condition that causes your blood to clot too easily, which would make using the device unsafe
- Your platelet count (cells that help blood clot) is very low
- You have a medical reason why you cannot take blood-thinning medication
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or think you might be pregnant
- You are considered part of a vulnerable population (confirm with trial site for details)
