Who might be able to join this trial:
All participants must meet these criteria:
- Between 18 and 60 years old
- Fluent in English
- Able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
For people with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) — an additional set of criteria applies:
- A formal diagnosis of Opioid Use Disorder based on standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
- Has used opioids for at least 12 months across their lifetime
- Has a recent urine drug test showing the presence of buprenorphine or methadone
- Currently receiving medication treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (such as methadone or buprenorphine), with the dose having been stable for at least the past month
- Use of other substances is not automatically disqualifying, as long as opioids are identified as the primary concern
Who may not be able to join:
For all participants:
- A history of head injury that caused loss of consciousness for more than 30 minutes
- A personal history of seizures or epilepsy
- Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Having metal objects in the body that are not safe for MRI scans, or having a fear of enclosed spaces
- Any history or diagnosed condition affecting the eyes, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, colour blindness, night blindness, retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, amblyopia, scotoma, corneal conditions, or diseases affecting any part of the eye
- A history of eye surgery
- Chronic migraines that are triggered by bright light
- Having worked night shifts or travelled across more than 2 time zones in the past month
For people with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) only:
- A primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder involving substances other than opioids
- A lifetime diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or a history of suicidality
- Previous experience with light-based treatment
- Currently taking psychiatric medications (including sleeping aids, hypnotics, or antidepressants) that have not been at a stable dose for at least 30 days before and during the study
For healthy comparison participants only:
- Any current or past diagnosis of a psychiatric condition, including any substance use disorder (other than nicotine or caffeine use)
- A current sleep disorder, such as insomnia disorder, based on standard diagnostic guidelines
