Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with sinus problems:

  • You have been diagnosed with chronic rhinosinusitis (long-term sinus inflammation) according to established medical guidelines
  • You have signed and dated a consent form agreeing to take part
  • You are scheduled to go into hospital for an endoscopic sinus surgery procedure

For healthy volunteers (control group):

  • You are having surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum (a crooked partition inside your nose) and do not have sinus disease
  • You have signed and dated a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

For people with sinus problems:

  • You have taken steroid tablets, antibiotics, anti-leukotriene medicines, or antihistamines in the last four weeks
  • You have had sinus surgery before
  • You have a fungal sinus infection, a specific type of non-cancerous nasal growth (inverted papilloma), or other nasal conditions
  • You have a weakened immune system or any suspected cancer affecting your nose or sinuses
  • You are unable to complete smell/scent tests due to a mental or physical reason

For healthy volunteers (control group):

  • You have nasal polyps, sinusitis, nasal tumours, or other nasal conditions
  • You have a reduced sense of smell or no sense of smell at all
  • You have been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease (a condition affecting the brain and nerves over time)
  • You are unable to complete smell/scent tests due to a mental or physical reason
