Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with a cochlear implant (up to 120 participants):
- Adults aged 18 to 99 years old
- People whose cochlear implant has been switched on and in use for more than one year
- People who meet the research eligibility requirements of the Iowa Cochlear Implant Project VIII (confirm with trial site)
- People who are able to understand the study information and are willing to sign a consent form
- People who developed severe hearing loss after the age of 16
For people with normal hearing (up to 30 participants):
- Adults aged 18 to 99 years old
- People whose hearing is typical for their age
- People who meet the research eligibility requirements of the Iowa Cochlear Implant Project VIII (confirm with trial site)
- People who are able to understand the study information and are willing to sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a medical history that includes seizures, head injury, neurological conditions, metabolic conditions, heart or blood vessel disease, or a previous stroke — unless the principal investigator approves their participation
- People who are currently pregnant or who report being pregnant (a urine pregnancy test will be done before a study injection is given)
- People who are currently taking medications that may affect blood flow to the brain, such as papaverine, ginkgo biloba, or acetazolamide
- People with an ongoing or uncontrolled illness that the investigator believes would make it difficult to participate fully in the study
