Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter that does not go away on its own.
- You have had a heart imaging test (such as an echocardiogram, MRI, or CT scan) during your heart rhythm problem that showed your heart's pumping strength (called ejection fraction) is below 50%, and this test was done within the last 3 months without any major heart events in between.
- If your heart's pumping strength was already known to be low before the rhythm problem, the rhythm problem must have caused it to drop by at least a further 10%.
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the study.
- You are able to understand what the study involves and agree to participate.
Who may not be able to join:
- You do not wish to give your consent to take part.
- You are not legally able to make your own decisions about participation (confirm with trial site).
- You are under 18 years of age.
- You are not expected to live for more than 1 year.
- You would not be able to attend follow-up appointments for at least 6 months.
- Your heart rate is faster than 140 beats per minute, which would make the heart imaging results unreliable.
- You have a previously known diagnosis of a heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy).
- You have severe disease of your mitral or aortic heart valves.
- You have coronary artery disease that cannot be treated with a procedure to restore blood flow.
- You are receiving emergency heart resuscitation care at the time of the study.
- You drink more than 80 grams of pure alcohol or more than 7 standard alcoholic drinks per day.
- You are currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy to the chest area.
- You have a known infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, Borrelia burgdorferi, or another infection known to damage the heart muscle.
