Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are having their first total knee or hip replacement surgery at the University of Miami Hospital
- People who are older than 18 years of age
- People who are able to understand and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
- People who speak English or Spanish
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a joint replacement in the same area being operated on
- People who have a history of sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, insomnia, abnormal sleep behaviours, or restless leg syndrome
- People who have a history of a chronic pain condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in the same arm or leg being operated on
- People who have a history of a nerve or myelin (nerve coating) disorder affecting the limb being operated on
- People who have a history of certain mental health conditions that could affect sleep, such as untreated depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
- People who are currently taking medications known to cause significant drowsiness or difficulty sleeping
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose surgery is for a reason other than primary osteoarthritis (for example, a pelvic or femur fracture)
- People with a known substance use disorder within the 6 months before surgery
- People with liver failure, as diagnosed by a doctor or shown through certain blood test results (confirm with trial site)
- People with chronic kidney disease or significantly reduced kidney function, based on a specific blood test result (confirm with trial site)
